HELP ! Importing csv file from PC banking application

Hello Everyone,

Since a few years I'm using MMEX, but since I'm not an IT specialist, I'm manually typing over all transactions from the PC Banking application in the MMEX application on a weekly basis to have an idea of income and expenses.

However I think things should be (much) easier and I would like to know how all transactions could be imported in 1 time (weekly) without having to type it all manually. I read the MMEX User Manual and the topic "Import from csv files" as well as the Help information of the PC Banking application, but applying this is quite impossible cause it is Chinese to me ... I did some trials which cost me hours but without any result.

The PC Banking application (BNP Paribas Fortis) allows to export data to a csv file, but once imported in a MS Excel file, all information is in a different order and format than the general MMEX format. And then remains the question how to fix this ...

E.g. 'CashFlow Online' (http://www.cashflow.nl/home.aspx) shows how an automatic import is possible in its application, without being an IT-expert, in a well explained document (Dutch).

Has anybody some experience with the PC banking application of BNP Paribas Fortis and its export tool ? Or would it be imaginable to develop such same automatic import tool, compatible with certain bank institutions ?

Hello Peter,

I am not using this program as long as you, but my IT background did help me a lot. Today I had a look at importing and exporting from MMEX. I also did have some problems, most of all because of undocumented requirements. But I got it working and have successful imported my banking information into MMEX. Of course I had to adjust a number of things, since my bank doesn't have payees or categories that I use in MMEX.

In general it is easy and a lot is the same as described in your PDF. In some ways this works even easier, since MMEX allows you to import many different lay-outs, as long as they are CSV-format AND do contain at least three essential columns. These are;
date
payee
amount
In my case the payee is not present (at least not in the way I use the program).
So I opened the CSV file in LibreOffice CALC (same as Excel) and added a column with (in my case) one value for the payee.
ALSO as I later found out I had to format the amount column. This must contain the same decimal point (comma or dot) as you system uses AND also you have to use 2 decimals. 700 euro is not allowed, but 700.00 is correct in the CSV. Whereby the dot also can be a comma if that is you decimal point.

Then save the file again as a CSV, CHECK THAT IT IS A UNICODE file, not an ANSI. If it is an ANSI file, you will get an error message that the file can not be opened.
Then start the import in MMEX, select the file.
Manually select the values for the columns, that is select if the first column is a date or something else, same applies for the second column etc. Where needed select unimportant, than that column is ignored.

In general that should do the trick for importing a CSV.

Ik gebruik het programma nog niet zo lang als jij, maar mijn IT achtergrond heeft me erg geholpen. Vandaag heb ik het importeren en exporteren in MMEX bekeken. Daarbij liep ik ook tegen diverse provblemen aan, mede door enkele niet gedocumenteerde vereisten. Maar ik heb het werkend gekregen en mijn bank gegevens ingelezen. Wel moest ik wat aanpassen, want mijn bank heeft geen begunstigde of categorie groepen, welke ik wel in MMEX gebruik.

Algemeen gesteld komt de procedure aardig overeen met wat in de geplaatste PDF staat vermeld. Alleen helaas geen lay-outs welke zijn vastgesteld per bank. Maar dat had je al gezien, want dan was het inlezen echt makkelijk geweest.

In het algemeen is MMEX flexibeler dan de meeste programma's omdat je zelf je kolommen mag kiezen. Het maakt niet uit hoe de CSV eruit ziet, zolang het maar aan een paar dingen voldoet. Je moet minimaal 3 kolommen hebben;
datum
begunstigde
bedrag.
In mijn geval heb ik geen begunstigde (tenminste niet zoals ik het programma gebruik)
Daarom heb ik het bestand in LibreOffice CALC (vergelijkbaar met Excel) geopend en die kolom (met voor mij maar één waarde) toegevoegd. Tevens heb ik toen de kolom met het bedrag van de juiste opmaak voorzien. Want zoals later bleek moeten de bedragen juist zijn opgemaakt. Daarbij is 700 euro niet goed, maar 700.00 (met de twee decimalen) wel. Of je een decimale punt of komma moet gebruiken, dat is afhankelijk van je systeeminstellingen.

Daarna het bestand weer opslaan en let op dat het een UNICODE CSV-bestand is. Want als het een ANSI CSV-bestand is, dan krijg je een foutmelding dat het bestand niet kan worden geopend.

Vervolgens start je MMEX en selecteert het aangemaakte CSV-bestand. Selecteer daarna de kolommen, bijv. bedrag als dat de eerste kolom is, vervolgens begunstigde als dat de 2e kolom is enz. Als een kolom er niet toe doet, dan kan je onbelangrijk als optie kiezen, dan wordt die kolom overgeslagen.
Let ook op dat je als het nodig is de datum format optie juist instelt.

Daarmee moet het mogelijk zijn om de data in te lezen.

Hopelijk lukt het. Zo niet, dan zie ik je vraag wel weer. Eventueel kan je (zonder vertrouwelijke info, dat spreekt voor zich) ook een voorbeeld van je CSV hier uploaden, dan kan ik je gedetailleerde uitleg geven.
